This master planning study and report was commissioned by the Port Elizabeth Municipality in December 1997 to prepare a Masterplan for the required bulk water supply infrastructure associated with the proposed phased development of the Coega IDZ, the adjacent Motherwell residential and Wells Estate developments.
The deliverables included determination of the water supply zones of existing and proposed reservoirs, integration of residential and industrial planning, route selection and sizing of the Coegakop reservoir supply pipeline and Markman approach gravity main. Various supply zones were identified and analysed in conjunction with peak supply and conveyancing capacities of the system.
Future water augmentation schemes for the Port Elizabeth metropolitan area were defined and the bulk water infrastructure components were phased to supply a development of 6 542 ha. The water demands of the Coega IDZ were integrated into the demands of the Metropolitan area.
