The Western District Council commissioned this Project in 1998. ACE undertook the bulk water supply master planning for the planning and implementation for the upgrading of the bulk water supply infrastructure to the Town of Kirkwood and surrounding villages.
The study involved a new approach and fresh analysis of the existing treatment and supply infrastructure, determination of existing and future demands, identification of bottlenecks in the supply system, prioritizing of works, master planning, environmental scoping and costing.
Afri-Coast carried out the detail design and construction for the improvements and capacity upgrading of the Kirkwood Water Treatment Works in 2000.
The Works entailed additional storage, reconstruction of raw water and final water pump stations, augmentation of high rate sand filtration, improvements to de-sludging system, flocculation and flash mixing facilities and concrete rehabilitation to the existing storage facilities. A new rising main to the Moses Mabida storage reservoir was designed and constructed during 2001.
